NEC Research Center

NEC - Germany

The NEC group delivers tailored solutions in the core technologies and services required in a networked world, ranging from advanced semiconductor solutions, to large-scale mission critical systems, systems integration, and broadband and mobile technologies.

NEC Europe Ltd., which is wholly owned by NEC Corporation, was established in London, UK in 1993. The NEC Laboratories Europe (NLE), with its Divisions for Network Research in Heidelberg and IT Research in St. Augustin, Germany, put a special emphasis on solutions that meet the needs of NEC's European customers, focusing on software-oriented research and development for the next-generation Internet and IT world. NLE has participated in several European R&D projects, e.g., MOBIVAS and MOBY DICK in the FP5 and in FP6 in MOBILIFE, SPICE, MAGNET Beyond, DAIDALOS, Ambient Networks, Enthrone, ANA, and UbiSecSens.

NEC will contribute to the OPEN project guaranteeing an up-to-date and sound knowledge of user and technology requirements for the migratory services domain. The multi-disciplinary and cooperative nature of the NEC Research Center will provide the necessary support to develop new ideas, applications, and technologies related to OPEN.

NEC will coordinate and carry out most of research related to the design and implementation of the core migratory services middleware.

NEC will also be active in research related to the definition of dynamically generated user interfaces and to system-support strategies for migratory services. NEC will exploit its own communication channels, its presence to public events, and its active role within several standardization forums to disseminate project’s results and to contribute to related standardization activities. NEC will also provide support for making some of the resulting software components available to its wide community of developers, thus enhancing development support for all products related to OPEN and making projects results more visible and tangible to the developers’ community.

Ernö Kovacs received his Dipl.-Inf. from the University of Kaiserslautern in 1991. From 1986-90 he worked at IBM's European Networking Centre (ENC). From 1991 to 1996 he was at the Institute of Parallel and Distributed High-Performance Systems (IPVR) of the University of Stuttgart, receiving his Ph.D.

In 1997 he joined Sony’s R&D lab in Stuttgart and was responsible for various ACTS/IST projects (OnTheMove, AMASE, BRAIN, Main, and Youngster). He conducted activities for multi-access service portals integrating mobile and broadband access, context-aware services, adaptation technologies for services and content, Bluetooth PAN standardisation, and middleware for UWB-based ad-hoc networks.

In 2005 he joined NEC’s “Networking Laboratories” as manager for “Internet Services”. His group works on service delivery platforms, IPTV, and context-aware services. He is a leading architect in the SPICE project and in the MAGNET project.

In IST-Open, he will focus on utilizing context management to identify and assess migration possibilities and on the public display scenario.

Miquel Martin received his MSc degree from the Universitat Politecnica de Catalunya, in Barcelona, Spain, on 2004. During his time there, he also held a position as network administrator and security expert at UPC. In 2003, he joined NEC to work on his MSc Thesis on the Next Steps in Signaling protocol (NSIS), and continued his stay as Research Scientist from late 2003 to the current date. He has worked in the MobiLife and SPICE projects, as well as numerous internal projects in the areas of context awareness, social networks and service platforms. His current interests focus on pervasive technologies, specifically contextual representations of the environment, and the people in it. Additionally, he is interested in the application of machine learning algorithms for the purposes of context processing and behaviour inference.

Miquel will act as WP4 leader in OPEN.

Clemens Kujawski received his Diploma degree in Computer Science in 1986 from the University of Hamburg. Following his studies he worked in the area of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics at Siemens Corporate Technology and the Bundeswehr University, Munich. In 1997 Clemens Kujawski joined the Technology & Innovation Division of Siemens Mobile where he gathered a lot of experience in the area of mobile gaming and became responsible for the team "Games, Entertainment and Augmented Reality". In 2007 Clemens Kujawski joined the IT Research Division of the NEC Laboratories Europe where he holds a position as Principal Researcher and Team Leader "Mobile Applications".
