CNR-ISTI (Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche, Istituto Scienze e Tecnologie dell’ Informazione) is a public research Institute of the Italian National Research Council working in the field of computer science. The activity of the Institute aims at increasing knowledge, developing and testing new ideas and widening the application areas.
The Institute is structured into a number of laboratories. The laboratory involved in this project is the laboratory on Human Interfaces in Information Systems headed by Dr. Fabio Paternò. The main goal of this laboratory is to investigate new solutions in basic and applied research in the field of human-computer interaction, user interface software, and interactive information systems. The main aim is to carry out research in methods and tools to support user interface designers and system developers to obtain usable systems that can be accessed from different contexts of use. This activity has mainly been carried out under the aegis of national programmes, international programmes and research contracts.
The lab has coordinated a number of European projects in the last five years (MEFISTO, GUITARE, EUD-Net, CAMELEON).
The group has been working for several years in methods and tools for the design and development of user interface software able to adapt to the resources of the interaction devices. In this project the group will work on a middleware able to automatically transform the user interface part of an application for supporting its migration, thus automatically generating adapted interface able to preserve the state of the session across various devices. CNR-ISTI will also coordinate the project.

Fabio Paternò received his Laurea Degree in Computer Science from the University of Pisa (Italy) and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of York (UK). Since 1986 he has been working at C.N.R. in Pisa, currently at ISTI, where he is Research Director and head of the laboratory on Human Interfaces in Information Systems.
His current research interests include Migratory Interfaces, Methods and Tools for Multimodal User Interface Design and Evaluation, User Interfaces for Mobile Devices, Model-Based Design of Interactive Systems, End-User Development, and Accessibility.
He was the chair of the first International Workshop on Design, Specification, and Verification of Interactive Systems. He is the author of the book on Model-Based Design and Evaluation of Interactive Applications. He has been member of the Programme Committee of the main international HCI conferences, including Papers Co-Chair of the ACM CHI 2000 conference, IFIP INTERACT 2003 and IFIP INTERACT 2005. He chaired the fourth Symposium on Human-Computer Interaction with Mobile Devices (September 2002). He is member of the IFIP Technical Committee 13 on Human Computer Interaction and has been chair of ACM SIGCHI Italy (in 2000-2004).
Carmen Santoro received her Laurea Degree in Computer Science from the University of Pisa (Italy) and since 1997 she has been working at C.N.R. in Pisa in the ISTI Institute, where she is a researcher in the Human Interfaces in Information Systems Laboratory. In 2004 she received her Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of Toulouse 1 (France).
During the last years she has worked on methods and tools for the analysis, design and development of interactive applications, and methods and tools for automatic support for usability evaluation.
Her current research interests also include methods and tools for multi-modal and multi-platform user interface design and evaluation.
She has published papers in international conferences and journals on human-computer interaction, she has been member of several international HCI conferences, and reviewer for international HCI journals. She was the Organizational Overviews Co-Chair of INTERACT 2005 Conference, and Workshop and Tutorial Chair of Mobile HCI 2002 Symposium.
She is currently Co-chair for CHI 2008 Workshops, and member of the program committee of INTERACT 2007, Tamodia 2007, EIS 2007, Mobile HCI 2007.
